North? South? Both???

If one has the resources, it's possible to tunnel or airdrop into Young. The vast majority of our guests, though, opt to drive something with wheels on it. 

For the best adventure, we suggest considering one way in and the other out for a loop tour. However, know that a road driven in one direction can be delightfully different in the opposite direction. This is among the best of Arizona, so there are no wrong answers.

Both the north and the south approaches offer
world-class treats for the road tripper.

North

Coming from: Sedona (NW), Payson (W), Winslow (N), Holbrook (NE), Snowflake, Show Low (E).

The home stretch to the TiPi from AZ 260 is 24 miles on the National Scenic Byway AZ 288 (aka Young Rd/Hwy, Young-Heber Rd), most of it unpaved. Yes, it's an unpaved state highway. Note that the early part of the road is also USFS Forest Road 512.

Find here the stunning Mogollon Rim, pronounced "Muggy-YAWN" (the "Rim" part be mercifully free of phonetic drama). Just go with "The Rim" if sidestepping controversy is your cup of tequila.

Our stretch of The Rim is part of the southern edge of the vast, four state Colorado Plateau, initially plunging over 2000' in a transition to the world's largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest. It is utterly spectacular.

The drive on 288 goes through two National Forests before making a steep, winding, paved, breathtaking drop into Young and HAPPY TIPI FUNTIME!

South

Coming from: Phoenix (SW), Globe (S)

The home stretch to the TiPi from AZ 188 is 50 miles on the National Scenic Byway AZ 288 (aka Globe-Young Highway), most of it unpaved.

The Apache Trail Historic Road leads from the Phoenix area via Apache Junction and Tortilla Flat to AZ 188 at the midpoint of Theodore Roosevelt Reservoir. Many call it the most scenic drive in Arizona.

From Roosevelt, go SE on 188 to 288 N to Young. Allow 4 hours for the 109 miles from Apache Junction to the tipi.

TIP - it's longer, but quicker to head N from Apache Junction to Payson and come in over the top.

From Globe, take 188 NW to 288, then N to Young.

The drive on lower 288 is also excellent, with many spectacular vistas. Even the fire-damaged areas are scenic and interesting, showing various stages of natural transitional processes in the world's biggest classroom and theater.
